Charles is the founder of YogaGrove. He started seriously engaging with Iyengar Yoga after starting classes with Pam Stewart in 2010. Through his work in the practice he began to witness the transformative and evolutionary power of this incredible art, science, and philosophy of yoga. After a comprehensive five year mentorship in November 2018 Charles was awarded his Level 2 Certificate. He has had the privilege of studying directly with the Iyengar family, Rajiv and Swati Chanchani, in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Charles cut his teeth teaching swimming lessons and Sunday school throughout his youth. He holds a BBA and a B.Ed from UPEI. His joy in teaching and humour make classes enjoyable and fun as well as challenging, educational, and rewarding. Charles continues his mentorship and intermediate studies with Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher Deborah Lomond in Nova Scotia (www.yogaview.ca.)
The best Yoga experience I've ever had. Charles is incredibly accommodating for any age and is extremely passionate about his teachings. He is welcoming to beginners and makes you feel comfortable on your first day. He has studied abroad in India, making him remarkably knowledgable in the teachings of Mr. Iyengar. The location is minutes away from the busy city and provides a calm place for meditation. The barn is gorgeous and quiet, perfect for the ultimate yoga experience.
Charles is an excellent yoga instructor - he doesn't sit up at the front in his own yoga bliss; he spends all his time helping us, correcting our poses, letting us know what sensations we should be aware of, and generally instructing! Feedback is immediate and helpful. And the location! Looking out onto a meadow of wildflowers through the open end of the converted heritage barn and feeling the summer breeze on your skin - amazing!
The Yoga Grove... Such a wonderful place to do yoga! On warm summer nights, the big double barn doors behind Charles stay open and allow a gentle scented breeze of grassy fields and ripening raspberries through the open working space of a transformed barn while bathing our practice in lovely evening light. Charles is a gifted yogi and instructor. His ability to describe, explain and demonstrate very subtle movements will benefit all, beginners and more advanced students alike.
Iyengar Yoga was developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, Pune India (www.bksiyengar.com). Today Iyengar Yoga is carried forward by his living family as well as a global community, devoted students, and yoga practitioners. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the classical philosophical substrate that runs through the teachings.
Patanjali's Astanga (8 limbed) Yoga are as follows:
Yama, conduct towards others or social discipline
Niyama, conduct towards oneself or individual discipline
Asana, practice of the postures for physical discipline
Pranayama, practice of breath control for mental discipline
Pratahrya, withdrawal or discipline of the senses
